POSITION:

JOB DESCRIPTION Restorative Nursing Aide (RNA) DEPARTMENT: Nursing

The Restorative Nursing Aide (RNA)is to continue the maintenance program established and instructed by Physical Therapist and/or Occupational Therapist with a physician’s order. Performs other restorative programs for assigned residents under the direction of the Director of Nursing or designee.

REPORTING:

This position is responsible to the Director of Nursing.

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High School graduate or equivalent preferred

License: Current, valid CNA certification issued by the Department of Health Services Current RNA Certification

Work Experience: Prior experience giving personal care to impaired individuals in a healthcare setting preferred

Language Skills:  Must be able to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical information, and to be easily understood through verbal communication in the English language.

Mathematical Skills:

  • Must be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to perform these operations using units of weight measurement, and volume.

Communication Skills:

  • Must have exceptional communication and customer service skills, and be empathetic.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, families, responsible parties, staff and outside resources and agencies.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs restorative/rehabilitation care and services (ambulation, Range of Motion, etc.) with residents as indicated in individual care plans.
  • Encourage residents to perform/participate in ADL functions
  • Demonstrate to residents and staff the procedures involved in the treatment process.
  • Document resident participation in and response to services in accordance with state regulations and facility policy.
  • Recommend modifications and changes in the residents’ restorative care.
  • Work closely with Nursing Staff and/or licensed rehabilitation staffs to assure services are performed to meet the needs of the resident.
  • Coordinate splinting program
  • Assist with lifting, turning, moving positioning and transporting residents into and out of beds, chairs, wheel chairs.
  • Practices proper body mechanics while delivering restorative nursing care.
  • Answer resident call lights promptly.
  • Obtain residents’ weight as indicated.
  • Provide weight bearing therapy in accordance with residents’ plan of care. Must possess the ability to communicate resident level of function and specific needs to receiving staff.
  • Must be able to relate to and work with the ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times hostile people within the facility.
  • Must possess the ability to communicate resident level of function and specific needs to receiving staff.
  • Comply with resident’s rights ensuring that all residents are treated fairly, with kindness, dignity, and respect.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of all resident care information.
  • Frequent use of mechanical equipment (equipment should only be used with proper training).
  • Shows dependability by being punctual; maintains consistent attendance.

JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Monitors use and condition of adaptive equipment/assistive devices, arranging for repair as needed./
  • Assists in Maintaining therapy area and equipment in clean, safe, functional condition./
  • Practice infection control guidelines./
  • Assist in standardizing the methods in which restorative care will be accomplished./
  • Follow established safety precautions./
  • Must be willing to incorporate change into existing nursing practices./
  • Follow established smoking regulations./
  • Report all complaints and grievances made by the resident./
  • Report all allegations of resident abuse and/or misappropriation of resident property./
  • Report any communicable or infectious disease./
  • Report all hazardous conditions, equipment and safety violations./
  • Report occupational exposures: blood, body fluids, infectious materials, and hazardous chemicals./
  • May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations./
  • May be called back during emergency conditions./
  • Attend and participate in mandated state, OSHA and CDC in-service training programs./
  • Works beyond normal working hours, on weekends and holidays, and in other positions./
  • Other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL CAPACITIES: (With or Without the Aid of Mechanical Devices)

  • Must be able to see and hear or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately to ensure that therequirements of this position can be fully met.
  • Must meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of this facility which includes an annual TB screening and physical examination.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 pounds.
  • Must be able to lift up and over 100 pounds with assistance according to resident’s abilities.
  • Must be able to move intermittently during working hours.
  • Must be able to stand for and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Continuous bending, squatting, twisting and reaching.
  • Must be able to squat, push, stoop and pull as needed especially in fulfilling resident care activities.
  • Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

    Inside work, normal temperatures, some noise, occasional fumes/odors, chemical exposure and potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens.

    This job cannot be performed without exposure to the stresses associated with an intimate, 24 hour skilled care environment that delivers care and services primarily to disabled and cognitively impaired residents in an aging population. Examples of these stresses include, but are not limited to: emergency health or safety response, weekend and holiday duty, unusual or impaired behavior by residents, family reactions to having a loved one in a nursing home, death and dying, oversight of state surveyors, ombudsmen and federal officials, presence of consultants and attorneys, and variable involvement of medical staff.

    HIPAA is a law that must be followed by all healthcare personnel at every level. This position is a Mandated Reporter regarding the suspicion of elder abuse and may have access to Protected Health Information (PHI).
